At HPC Specialty Infusion, we’re committed to shining a light on rare and chronic conditions that impact our patients every day. This June, in recognition of Myasthenia Gravis (MG) Awareness Month, we’re joining the movement to raise awareness, educate the community, and offer support to those living with this challenging neuromuscular disease.

What is Myasthenia Gravis?

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disorder that causes weakness in the skeletal muscles – the muscles the body uses for movement. The hallmark of MG is muscle weakness that worsens with activity and improves with rest.

This occurs when the immune system produces antibodies that block or destroy communication between nerves and muscles, specifically targeting acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction.

Common symptoms include:

Although MG is rare, it affects tens of thousands of Americans, and early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are critical to managing symptoms and preventing crisis episodes.

How is MG Treated?

There is no cure for MG, but many patients find relief and stability through a combination of medical therapies designed to improve muscle function and suppress immune system activity.

Common treatment options include:

The Role of Infusion Therapy in MG Care

At HPC Specialty Infusion, we provide infusion therapies that play a key role in the treatment of MG, particularly for patients experiencing worsening symptoms or not responding to oral medications alone.

Two common infusion therapies include:

  1. Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG):
    • Delivers pooled antibodies that help regulate the immune system
    • Can reduce autoantibody activity and ease MG symptoms
    • Often used during acute MG flare-ups or in preparation for surgery
  2. Plasma Exchange (PLEX):
    • Removes harmful antibodies from the bloodstream
    • Typically used in more severe cases or during a myasthenic crisis

While plasma exchange is usually performed in a hospital, IVIG therapy can be administered in the comfort of a patient’s home under the care of skilled nurses – like those at HPC. Our compassionate, experienced infusion team ensures that patients with MG receive safe, consistent care tailored to their specific treatment plan and lifestyle.

Raising Awareness: Why It Matters

MG is often misunderstood or misdiagnosed. Increased awareness leads to:

What You Can Do to Help

Learn and share: Educate yourself and others about MG. Share information from reliable sources like the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MGFA).

Support patients: If you know someone living with MG, ask how you can support them. Offer understanding, flexibility, and encouragement.

Donate or advocate: Support MG research organizations or participate in awareness campaigns during the month of June and beyond!

Encourage proactive care: If someone you love has been diagnosed with MG, help them stay on track with their infusion treatments and follow-up care.
